Is Poplar Safe or Unsafe?

My husband was wondering if Chinchillas can have shelves made out of poplar wood? I'm not sure if he said it was untreated. I'm just the momma and being very protective of my new baby.
Coated Wire?

I found a new cage at a local pet store. Its really big, so I know my chins will enjoy it, and it has a great price. The only problem with it is that the wire is coated. Is it still okay to get? I've never seen my chins chewing on their wire before, but they may if its coated. Is this harmful?

Do Chinchillas Need To Go To The Veterinarian?
Do they need check ups? If they do are there any other pets you know of that don't need to go to the vet? I just hate paying the bills.
How Can I Tame My Pet Chinchillas and How Long Does It Take?
I've recently bought two pet chinchillas, they are adorable. I'd like to try and tame them. They are allowed out to run around for at least two hours every night but getting them back in their cage is a bit of a nightmare. How do you do about taming a chinchilla and how long should it take before they trust me enough to allow me to pick them up and put them back in the cage?

Pikachu is my one and only chin. My husband said that one of the girls at his work has a friend who is moving and can't bring her chinchillas with her. Also, the female is pregnant and so the owner said I could have one of the babies. Well, that fell through, because her brother took in the chinchillas.
How Do You Serve Your Hay?

I was just wondering what does everyone use to put their hay in?
I have heard so many sad stories of chins and hay racks and balls and feeders I'm just wondering what everyone uses and what works.
Right now I just put the hay on the shelf and whip it down everyday cause they like to go potty on it. I have tried a bowl and they still pee in it.
Melamine, metal, and other issues

Okay, after observing the ups and downs of many different cages, I've decided to take on the project of building my own (which is not much of a problem thanks to the many posts I've found).
Sadly, I've caught myself at a dead-end on the melamine situation. I want the inside of the cage to be melamine, yet I do not know how you can purchase large slabs of it rather than tiny shelf pieces.
