PetsPlease asks…
I found a new cage at a local pet store. Its really big, so I know my chins will enjoy it, and it has a great price. The only problem with it is that the wire is coated. Is it still okay to get? I've never seen my chins chewing on their wire before, but they may if its coated. Is this harmful?
Thank you!

I'm going to guess that some coated wire could be bad for your chinchillas. Of course, determining what is and isn't bad won't be easy. I doubt the pet store would know.
However, what you might want to do instead is think of ways to cover the wire in key locations. Our chins only chew the wire in one spot so to keep them from chewing we just needed to cover that one spot with some wood or something. The rest of the cage, which is pretty big, goes unchewed.

I would recommend QualityCages.com if you have a few days to spare for shipping. Best overall and much cheaper than the plastic bottom variety offered at most pet stores. Martin's Cages are also nice. Less time for shipping but not as big as Quality Cage.

We adopted our foreverfriend "Chile" in May and have used your website consistently over the past 2 months. One question not addressed in any of the books we researched or in the archives, is the problem we are having with his fur. He leans against the same spot of the wire cage everyday and has "rubbed off" a spot of fur about the size of a quarter. It has been at least a month and the fur does not seem to be growing back. Is this a condition we should be concerned about? He eats great, plays like the 8 month old that he is, and grits his teeth when he is finished playing. He does not bite. We LOVE him, and want to do what is right. Please help.
