snuggy1 asks...

How does everyone out there clean wooden cages?

Chinchilla Planet answers...

The base of our cage is made out of melamine. This makes it easy to clean. We also have a wooden box with bedding to encourage our chins to do their "business" there rather than on the shelves of the cage.

However, when the shelves do get too dirty we replace them as our cage design allows us to pull shelves out as needed. We use the cheapest (safe) pine that we can for shelves. Leading up to replacing shelves, we'll use various techniques to sand/scrape off the shelves but eventually this stops being effective. We've also found that vinegar does a pretty good job of cleaning pine shelves. The vinegar doesn't remove all stains, but it does seem to be a safe and effective cleaning agent.

    Salena,

Will your chinchilla be able to get to the walls in the closet? If not, use whatever material is cheap and easy to clean. If chewing will be possible, pine or aspen are you best bets.
